NFL Top Scorer... Waiting to Score?
08 July, 2015

Seattle Seahawks QB Russell Wilson, 2013 Superbowl winner and 2014 contender, made a huge decision recently. He didn't trade teams or ask for a larger salary; he told his girlfriend he wanted to wait until marriage to have sex.
It may not sound like a huge deal, except the fact his girlfriend is Ciara, R&B phenomena widely known for her promiscuous music videos. I grew up listening to Ciara like everyone else born in the early '90's, and I can "one, two step" like it's no ones business. But the point is this: all (yes, all) of Ciara's songs are related to... sex. That's not completely out of the ordinary considering the status of the current Billboard 100, but Ciara is one I'd never expect to agree to abstinence, especially with no known marriage date on the horizons.
After thinking about it a bit more, Wilson isn't someone I'd really expect to suggest abstinence, either. Being a young, very attractive (if I may), Superbowl winning celebrity, it's VERY out of the ordinary to willingly wait. Lots of NBA and NFL players say they're Christian, but few and far between go so far as to tell the world (in this case, a San Diego based church called The Rock) they're actively practicing abstinence to follow Jesus.
Apparently, Wilson was in Ciara's dressing room 15 minutes before she was going on stage for a show, and Jesus spoke directly to his heart to "lead Ciara (throughout their lives) and wait until marriage." He asked Ciara what she thought about doing things "Jesus' way," and she agreed. The two have been dating publicly since, even attending a private dinner at the White House as a couple.
Wilson asked the church to "pray for him," as the temptation is obviously real and challenging... but with rewards awaiting. A reward of a Godly marriage; a reward of saying YES to Jesus; and a reward of serving as an example in a world lacking role models.
Wilson upsets the media's take on life that fame, looks, and sleeping around will lead to a happy life. He's got the fame, and he's definitely got the looks, but Wilson knows the truth most ignore: waiting to have sex until marriage will absolutely lead to a stronger bond founded on trust and faith. No married couple who practiced absitinence before marriage has EVER regretted it once married. I can guarantee it with a life-time warranty.
Why do men sleep with women before marriage? They don't think they're strong enough not to, so they give in. Why do women sleep with men before marriage? They're insecure about keeping him interested and satisfied. In the eyes of God, both are excuses. Men, through the strength of God alone, can and should wait. Women, through the worthiness found in Jesus, can and should wait.
The aspect I like most about Ciara and Wilson waiting for marriage is how it was initiated by Wilson. He stepped up to serve as a LEADER in their relationship (a Godly leader at that!) He knew what he had to do to protect their marriage from 1) insecurity & 2) divorce (like 99% of other celebrities).
The aspect I dislike most about Ciara and Wilson waiting for marriage is the response from the media. The same athletes and commentators who CELEBRATED and CONGRATULATED Bruce Jenner for becoming a woman are CRITICIZING and CURSING Wilson's decision. Why's that? They themselves DIDN'T follow the same inner convictions God probably spoke to them at some point, and they knew they (unlike Wilson) had chosen darkness over light.
Isn't is funny how jealous people can get? Seeing a pretty girl or a successful man, they will pick at every little flaw to make themselves feel better. Ciara and Wilson's relationship is the exact same. Why should people have to bash them when they're doing no harm to others? Easy - they're jealous. Men are jealous of Wilson for having the balls (no pun intended) to lead a woman properly. Women are jealous of Ciara for partaking in a relationship of purity and for being treated with respect.
So, what should we - as the public - do about it? Follow suit. Become the next Ciara and Wilson of our hometowns, serve as role models of purity, and ignore the haters. Live a life for Jesus and find ourselves in complete and total light, free of the darkness and chains most struggle with. So many look to the Bible as a giant rule book always "ruining the fun." Is that true? Just ask Wilson 30 years from now when he's happily married to the love of his life, and you'll find your answer.
And now, for old times sake, "Ciaraaaaa".....
