Today's post is short and sweet, all about Bob Goff, my favorite author (shown above). He wrote the book Love Does, filled with stories of his awesome, whimsical life. Goff is a professor at Pepperdine, my alma mater, so I've had the pleasure of seeing him speak a few times.

Here's a couple snippets from his book:

  1. He wanted to become a lawyer but got into NO law schools. So, he took matters into his own hands. He walked into the law school he wanted to attend and sat on the bench outside the Dean's office for weeks asking for admittance. Then, one day, the Dean told Goff to go buy his books. He's now the US ambassador of Uganda thanks to that degree.
  2. He left a peanut butter and jelly sandwich on his future wife Maria's car every day until she accepted a date from him.
  3. He rides his Harley to Disneyland every Wednesday afternoon to his office, a table on Tom Sawyers island. There he talks to anyone who wants to meet with him.
  4. He put his phone number at the end of the book for readers to call with any questions or comments.
  5. He and his kids, when they were young, sent a letter to the President (or leader) of every country in the entire world asking if they could personally meet with them. He told his kids they would visit whoever responded, thinking no one would. To his surprise, over 20 responded, and they visited every one of them in their country's.
  6. His son played a game called "Bigger and Better," where he started with a dime and walked to his neighbors house asking what they'd like to trade for that dime. They gave him an old mattress. He went to the next house with the mattress and was given a ping pong table. The next house gave him an elk head. And, by the end of the day, his son Richard drove home in a truck.

Bob lives life all-out. Instead of saying no, he says yes. And because of that, he's had experiences most would only dream of doing. He titled his book "Love Does" because he feels Christians should go out and make love a reality, not just a subject of discussion. His book centers around how, because we're God's people, we are to act as the hands and feet of Him during our time on Earth.

Bob understands how beautiful life is. He see's things as Jesus would see them: as precious, glorious, and extraordinary. Do you find yourself wishing you lived life a little more like Bob?

Figure out what fuels your joy. Then do lots of that.
